Thanks Cat Dumitru for reading. I’m going to go deeper into Regulars for a future article, but what I’m recommending is that instead of measuring all DAU retention, focus on a smaller but more important group of core players (we call them Regulars) and measure their early retention rates to get “signal” in an otherwise very noisy early retention read. The importance of this is that if your core audience has the potential to play for years, figure out how many of those people you have early on as a percent of installs instead of all DAU.
For your second question — We vet games on genre gameplay innovation, genre graphics innovation, engagement depth, economy depth, elder gameplay, social interaction design, and live operations design. I’ll also pen another piece on this, and why Kabam tries to put all these things into place on Day 1 — which is why our production budgets are now $14M.
