If the author chooses to live their life in a manner in which they are making very little money, that is their choice. There is nothing in your student loan terms that state that you must “try your very hardest to earn as much money as possible”. If they are living life the way they want to, and that just happens to be in a way in which they are not making large loan payments, then why is this wrong?
