Of course there are lots of ways to grab attention. Whether you want to do giveaways like Gary Vaynerchuk’s #60secclub on Instagram, you want to mislead your community in the name of attention like PewDiePie’s recent YouTube stunts, or you want to use social advertising to boost your content’s reach, hire a professional to create some awesome video content for you.

The problem is, most of the tried and true approaches for standing out involve money, and most of us unfortunately do not have an unlimited marketing budget for 2017. Luckily there are other ways to stand out and make connections with your audience.

Emoji are ubiquitous in our culture. They cross generational lines, grandfathers and teenage girls are using images of poo, unicorns and cuddly animals in everyday communication on social media, email and more.

I’m such a huge fan of emoji’s and without them, I’m not sure how I would communicate with my children. 😎

Personally I look forward to picking up the newest Apple Macbook Pro, which will have emoji’s built right into the keyboard.

On Twitter, where we’re limited to just 140 characters, you can say so much with emoji’s. They make you standout! Currently I love using GetEmoji (such a cool website).

I absolutely love Twitters new partnership with Google. If You Tweet an Emoji to Google’s Twitter account, It will link to a local search results of businesses specializing in what that emoji represents. Like 🍔 Hamburger Restaurants 🍕 Pizza shops.

For example, this past weekend I wanted to pick up flowers for a party we were heading to and wanted to find local flower shops. I simply Tweeted: @Google 🌹

If you really want to stand out on Twitter, always include a few emoji’s and a Gif, and you’ve got a winning profile 😀🤗🐨

😍I love emoji’s! Take a look at my Twitter feed and you’ll see just how much I love them. One of my favourite tools to find emoji’s is Emojipedia — the search function is great to find any kind of emoji 🔍.

✍ Another place I love using emojis is in blogs. They break up paragraphs and add a creative flare to any blog! Take a look at my #GIANTSpotlight blog as an example.

Simply put, emoji’s allow you to express some basic emotion, when communicating via text and image. AND for me much more importantly… to add context, via expression, to a communication that might otherwise be misinterpreted.

Use a variety of emojis but really claim a couple for yourself — these emojis will almost become an extension of your brand and when used, people should begin to automatically recall you! 😎

Ten years ago it may have sounded silly…but emojis really do play an important part in branding and digital communications, particularly amongst the younger crowds. So, if your target market is millenial-age or younger — you know what you must do.

Realise the importance of emojis because in today’s world, visual connects far deeper than textual!

Did you know? There’s a source of emoji art that’s free to use — even in commercial (for-profit) services and products. You can easily download the entire collection, or pick and choose a few you want. You can even grab their SVG files! These are vector-based, which means you can make the art as large as you like with no loss of quality. 🎨

The site is EmojiOne.com. For commercial projects, they simply require a link back (see details on the site). For personal projects, no attribution is required.

I used several on my recent free report and infographic about content marketing. The infographic got a lot of traction on Pinterest, with 2.4K pins in 7 weeks. I think it’s partly due to those cute emojis!❤

Emojis are becoming increasingly popular 🔥. I’m sorry, but you can’t ignore them any longer. Emojis are here to stay. They aren’t a gimmick; they are a way of messaging.

For me, if your demographic are using emojis, so should you. It’s a great marketing effort to be authentic and connect with them.

A simple emoji can humanize a brand. It adds a personal element to a post.
Just a simple smiley face is a good upgrade to a post. My best emoji marketing tip is to learn them beforehand. Emojis come with their syntax. They can change depending on your demographic.

Just like the eggplant emoji, 🍆 for some, it may be an innocent vegetable. For others, the meaning is a little more suggestive. Do your research before use them. Otherwise, just keep it simple. Don’t go overboard with your emojis.

There you have it. If you want to learn more about emoji and using emoji in your marketing you can join the Emoji Marketing Challenge.
