Long story short
The fight of the century is under 36 hours away. Fans everywhere have been waiting since Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor started talking it up just about one year ago. Nobody thought the fight would become reality, and then Floyd Mayweather responded to a journalist’s question while on his retirement tour. The journalist asked Mayweather if McGregor would stand a chance in the ring with him. Mayweather, keep in mind on his retirement tour, responded, “I’m an elephant. Elephants don’t beef with ants.” The line sparked McGregor, and the smack talking begun.
When and where
Months passed and nobody was sure if the fight would really happen, or if rumors would swirl and eventually die. But, McGregor and Mayweather made it happen. The fight is on and the sports world is buzzing about it. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The first crossover multi-million-dollar fight between boxing and mixed martial arts is taking place in the Sin City at 9 p.m. ET, and it is going to be talked about for a long time.
The expectation
Fans won’t be let down if Mayweather wipes the floor with McGregor, because that is what the experts are predicting. That is the expectation. All of the boxing guru’s opinions are pointing towards a Mayweather unanimous decision or knockout, yet he hasn’t knocked anybody out in over 10 years. So why will Mayweather knock McGregor out? Nobody seems to have a true answer to this question, but the overwhelming answer seems to be, “because Conor has never boxed before.” It is safe to say this fight will be different because people are expecting the worst, but hoping for the best.
Mayweather’s odds
Right now, the odds are in Mayweather’s favor, but dropping steadily. -550 seems to be the steady number about a day and a half before the fight begins. That means somebody would have to bet $550 dollars to win $100 dollars if they were betting on Mayweather.
McGregor’s odds
Vegas is betting heavily against Conor McGregor. The Ireland native is one of the most confident fighters since Muhammad Ali, but next to nobody is giving him a shot. Right now somebody could bet $100 dollars on Conor McGregor and win $550, and that is why this fight could shake up the betting world for a long time.
Mayweather’s last fight
Sports fans everywhere were tuned in to pay-per-view for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in 2015. Fans were expecting two juggernauts to collide and go blow for blow. Boxing fans were ecstatic the way Mayweather was ducking and dodging punches, but for the average sports fan, the fight was flat out boring. With Mayweather’s orthodox style of fighting, like his shoulder roll, the majority of his fighting is done in a defensive stance. In his last fight Mayweather once again proved why he is the greatest fighter of his generation, and true boxing fans were not surprised at all.
Some boxing experts say this fight will be boring, and some say the fight will be over in a couple of rounds. Nobody will truly know until the two juggernauts in the fighting world step into the ring on Saturday night. Until then, there is just about 36 hours to talk about all of the different possibilities the fight could bring.
Why this fight could go either way
Mayweather has been known to struggle against southpaw style fighters. If you are unfamiliar with a southpaw, that is a term used to describe a fighting stance where the designated boxer has their right hand and right foot forward. A southpaw leads with right jabs, and following with left cross-right hook punches. For left handed boxers, southpaw is the normal stance.
McGregor could shake the fight up with his unorthodox fighting style that Mayweather struggles with, not to mention he has become one of the most powerful punchers in all of the UFC with 18 knockouts. Multiple times throughout the press conferences, McGregor has stated that he will “bounce Floyd’s head off of the canvas.” Well McGregor, the fight is 36 hours away. Show us what you’ve got.
Mayweather is undisputed and undefeated
This could just be another walk in the park for $100 million dollars for Floyd Mayweather. He has done this countless times. Picking and choosing the fights he wants has become an expertise. What is one more fight to the greatest of all time? Especially since McGregor has never boxed professionally, Mayweather seems to think he’s got McGregor right where he wants him. For somebody that has only been knocked down once in his career, Mayweather is not stressing this fight. But, 2017 was a year that Donald Trump was elected president, so expect for the worst, and hope for the best.
