Startup culture : differences in the US, UK and Russia.

Working at any startup is quite challenging as there is no promise that it will succeed in the real business environment. However, some young professionals prefer to start their career in small companies rather than in huge ones. The explanation is simple — working at startups usually implies lots of fun, friendly atmosphere, flexible timings and sometimes a more competitive salary. We decided to ask our CallbackHunter team who had worked in startups in the UK, US and Russia to what extent startup cultures are different in these countries.

Maria, worked at the US startup

“I have been working at the startup in the US and to my mind, when you build a company in the US you don’t face big challenges in finding investments and seeking media coverage for your case in comparison with the business environments in other countries. While the US market seems to be one of the most competitive in the world and business owners are quite cautious about the copyright, trademark licensing and other legal proceedings, generally speaking people are more open-minded, ready to test new products and invest money on validated business models.

Due to my work at the startup in the US I have gained valuable experience and learnt new promotional tactics and ways of finding the right target audience and small business financing”.

Valerie, worked at the UK startup

“I worked for the London-based startup during 8 months and it taught me invaluable life lessons and helped to expand my professional knowledge and adopt new skills. In general, the work culture was very nice and all employees were ready to collaborate, share their views and contribute to the success of the business. However, it’s worth mentioning that the UK fundraising environment is quite challenging. From my point of view, UK investors and entrepreneurs are more reluctant to work with startups. Moreover, government regulations and procedures seem to be laborious and lengthy. In other words, while my personal experience was very valuable for my future career and professional development, I wouldn’t start my business in the UK”.

Alexandr, worked at the Russian startup

“Today one of the main goals of the Russian government is to enable technological startups to develop and form the new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs. In recent years I have kept watch over these changes and decided to quit my boring corporate job for a fast-developing IT startup. Obviously, the startup culture is different, people here are full of ideas, highly passionate and enthusiastic. I would say that Russian entrepreneurs are more emotional and at the same time more purposeful and data-driven. It sparks inspiration and makes you more efficient than you have ever been”.
