What about all the smaller mammals and insects that are poisoned by grain based monoculture?

The degree to which modern society relies on the direct exploitation and unnecessary killing of animals is vast and catastrophic. Of course killing mammals and insects should be avoided as much as is practical and possible and eating a plant-based diet does not require supporting monoculture. Much of the grain harvested in monocultures is fed to livestock in animal ag industries rather than going to feed humans.

Bears eat meat as a matter of survival. As modern humans living in societies, we have access to plant-based food sources and can thrive on a diet devoid of animals and their ‘products’. Eating meat is more than just unhealthy and unnecessary. It damages the planet and is directly harmful to the individuals killed and exploited in the name of food. We can and should do better. Every small step in the right direction helps.
