Many people suffer from depression during the holidays. The reason can be many, from a parent or relative who is no longer there to not being able to afford the presents they wish. Add to it the darkness and cold of the winter time.

And looking for a job during this time of the year can also be depressing for some individuals. It is a time of reflection about you have done throughout the past 12 months, for instance. Plus, there is a strong pressure for consuming, and they know they can’t cope with it. And, on top of it, they expect unpleasant questions during Christmas dinner from not-so-sensitive relatives.

1. Focus on your Goal instead of Criticism

You need to keep yourself remembered and this type of get-together, along with the holiday’s spirit might help you to find out which should be your next step. Plus, a bit of laughing and good memories will help to improve your mood.

4. Try Volunteering

There are several volunteering opportunities available during the holidays. It can be fundraising, singing carols, delivering presents, or organising a dinner in your community. Most of the charities are happy to take temporary volunteers at this time of the year, and you can be one of them.

Not sure why you should do it? Well, the fact is that most of the people who suffers from depression has the fact of feeling useless and unproductive in the root of the problem. They get the feeling that they can’t do anything right and that nobody needs them for anything. So what is the best way to change their mind about it than putting a smile on someone else’s face?

5. Don’t stop looking for a Job

Despite the fact that many people will tell you that is pointless to look for a job during the holidays, don’t hear them. It is true that a good number of senior managers will be away, some will not. And they will be in focused on planning and doing less stressful tasks, so you go a better chance to reach them.

Even if all senior staff is on holidays, it still might be the perfect time for you to call their assistants and ask about the hiring process, and for a direct email to send your resume and cover letter. People will be more reachable at this time of the year, and you should make the most of it.

6. Final advice: Do some Research

You got plenty of time on your hands so do your homework. Search for the top companies reviews and find out the best way to get in touch with them. Figure out if there are any job directories that you haven’t explored yet. Update your LinkedIn profile with an outstanding picture and an engaging summary.

The point here is to remain active. Depression will stay away from you if you keep your mind busy and focus on the positive side of the story. Always believe that you can do better and fight for it. This way your CV, cover letter, and interviews will sound much more confident, and you will increase your chances to be hired.
