I Disagree With Notorious R.B.G.

“It is Really Dumb of Them” to kneel during the National Anthem.

Just this week Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg expressed her opinion about Colin Kaepernick and his choice to kneel during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. In an interview recently she expressed that the acts by Kaepernick and other football players were dumb and disrespectful, but did say she wouldn’t arrest them for expressing their concerns. As a progressive and a fan of Justice Ginsburg, I find it hard to agree with her on the statement of Kaepernick and his protest being “dumb and disrespectful.”

Colin Kaepernick began his protest because wanted to speak out for injustice in the Criminal Justice system of the United States and the racist remarks in Francis Scott Key’s poem which became the National Anthem of the United States. With the Black Lives Matter Movement gaining momentum from many celebrities and average citizens, many people have found many ways to express their concern about the issues of police brutality. Kaepernick’s philosophy about what he is doing simply means that he chooses not to salute to a country where racial profiling and racism is still a big part of the country, he is simply also expressing his concern that America is great but it isn’t perfect.

Calling Kaepernick’s protest “dumb” and “arrogant” were very disappointing to hear from Justice Ginsburg. His protest wasn’t arrogant and especially not dumb. Justice Ginsburg should look into the deeper meaning of the issue (if she already hasn’t) and see what Kaepernick is trying to convey in his protest. He fully has the right to protest that way and it is not dumb or arrogant because of the racism and violence about slavery in Francis Scott Key’s poem.
