There’s More To A Golf Club Than Just Golf

Lesson 1 in effective management will always be ‘Reflection’… The value adding moments of tranquil inquisition, “Should I, Could I, Would I”. As true in the professional sense as in simple life management….

Take my personal experience as a carbon copy example…

Working 24–7 in a senior management position whilst studying an MBA to realize further potential, raising a family and somehow building foundations for the future.

Sounds hectic I know… but the little secret I hold dear is my personal slice of paradise…hidden away in West Sussex, UK…Is Ham Manor… My Golf Club..

This could be anything in context, a favorite park, an undiscovered shoreline it doesn't really matter. Whats important is its ability to alienate your mind from the everyday, demolish the perceived boundaries imposed by peer discussion and just dissect your thoughts…Alone..

Which brings me quite nicely onto the subject heading…. More than just a golf club…

Modern life, in the generic sense, is driven by efficiency.. “How quick, to slow, not enough time”… we are all soapbox specialists in this regard. The initiation for me came many years ago when i found the security of Golf… Here is an opportunity to leave the office at the end of the day, or postpone decisions in the home and just think… But it became limiting.. Sure there were local facilities, courses within the area, but this soon became a distraction.

Arranging then rocking up to a new course, new challenges and new environments diluted the opportunity to reflect… Distractions around every dogleg….

It was only during an opportunistic visit to a local club I discovered the limitless opportunity and hospitality of a traditional members club. Here is an institution that provides exactly what i need… Superficially most will interpret it to be simply a golf club… “Nice building, green grass and guys in shorts and shoes” but work down from the initial concepts and dig deeper… Open access to any opportunity, a familiar surrounding and unit-erupted miles of solitude…

I would honestly vow that my most successful strategies, project planning and concept development have all been conceived and developed between holes 5 & 17.. its simply a fact..

It may just be the fresh air, the still surroundings or the blood pumping as your gently stole around the 5 miles…. It may be the getting back to nature, hearing the birds chirping… (now we are getting too far out) or for me it may be the humility or success riding on every swing of the club… that’s a whole other story…

What is solid in my mind is that the declining affiliation to these great institutions, these sanctuaries to reflection, stands as a decline to our innovation, a failed opportunity for improvement and a lost connection to your deepest potential

Make the time to reflect now…
