Times are hard.

At least, that’s the general consensus with the recession and all. But you’d be hard pressed to believe that if you went to the computer village. Hundreds of people everyday moving in and out of phone shops — window shopping, pricing and buying new phones.

The average lifespan for a phone varies (when the next Galaxy or iPhone is released, duh!) and your mileage may vary. But once you make that mental assent to get a new phone, you’re left with an old phone and three options:

i. you could keep it as a spare,

ii. give it out to a family member or friend

iii. Sell it off for cash

This article is for those who’ll take the last option.

Tips to help you get more bang for your buck when selling your phone

Selling off your old phone is tricky. The bargain marketplace is a tough market and they haggle like geniuses. It will be hard to find a good deal on your phone but there are few tricks that will leave you in a stronger position:

1.The phone’s in good condition

Your phone’s current condition has a big impact on its value. Phones in like-new condition earn a premium. Cracked, scratched or otherwise damaged phones, won’t be worth as much which is why screen protectors and cases are important investments. Phones that don’t work at all are worth nothing though some technicians will be interested in buying them for parts.

2. It’s new-ish; 1 to 2 years old

The older your phone is, the less it will be worth.

3. You have original accessories

Many bargain hunters want the original power cable and sometimes other original accessories. If you don’t have these, the phone will be worth less. If you have the originals, then you have more bargaining power. It also helps if you have the original packaging and all included cables and cords.

4. It’s popular

You’re more likely to find buyers for popular phones that have aged. There’s greatest demand for iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones.

5. It’s a premium device (rather than budget)

If your phone was not once a premium phone, flagship device or a high end one, i.e. you bought it as a budget phone, forget selling. It will be extremely difficult to pawn off an old budget phone. Nobody’s that poor.

6. Raid the closet

If you’re going to cash in on one phone, you might as well see which other dusty, rusty electronics you have at home: phones, cameras, consoles, watches, laptops etc. By bundling them together, you can place a higher asking price for your phone.

Don’t forget to backup your documents, photos and videos to your computer or a cloud storage service, deactivate your device and reset it to factory settings. Remove cases, screen protectors, the microSD card and your SIM card.

Good luck!
