“Do you do yoga?”

These were the first words my husband ever said to me.

I admit it, I thought it was the cheesiest pick-up line. But to give you a little context, I had just did a handstand in the middle of a dance-floor while my friend, Vula, sang the most amazing music from my ultimate fav electronic music group Bassment Jaxx.

It’s just what people like me do when we get excited!

Thinking he would pick-up on my better than that-ness when I replied “No! I’m a gymnast,” it didn’t seem to phase him. He went on to show me a pretty slick backbend just after he tells me he does yoga.

Almost 6 years later, I still struggle to do yoga everyday like he does. Our daughters have been immersed in a hybrid yoga-nastics training since birth where our oldest was able to do them up the wall by herself at 8 months.

But I’m not here to brag about what I’ve done but rather to give you a little more insight as to why I’m so passionate about what I’m doing

Sure, handstands are fun. 🙃

But it’s more about bringing people together.

Handstands are composed of only 3 key ingredients:

  1. Balance
  2. Belief
  3. Strength

Once you’ve built these ingredients up within yourself you can achieve the results you want…a pretty awesome handstand.

I also believe that diversity within a community requires those exact 3 ingredients. It’s also important to make sure these ingredients are kept free from impurities.

What causes a community to loose its strength?

  • Me over We mentality
  • Leaders with large egos
  • Poor Nutrition
  • Poor Fitness
  • Disconnect from real life experience

What

  • Ex
  • Inflation
  • Laws that make it impossible to get the same human rights as another human based on your age, race, sex, disability.
  • Language
  • Unconscious bias
  • Tradition

What causes

  • Lies
  • Scare tactics
  • Distractions

I wish I had all the answers on how to keep these impurities out of a community and the entire human population on the globe. I accept that I don’t but by bringing my love of handstands to the world I hope to start the conversations with people who want to make this a reality too.

On June 25th, 2016 I’m joining the rest of Singapore to break the Guinness World Record for the Most Handstands in a Group in celebration of International Handstand Day 2016. We have over 15 Singaporean Organisations (and counting) and amazing partners onboard whom I am blessed to be connected with. This will be my 2nd GWR and I can’t wait to share this one with the gymnasts that I have coached in the last 5 years, colleagues, family, friends and new friends I don’t even know yet.

Someone told me that what I’m trying to do can’t be done.

But they forgot something.

That we handstanders, have the whole world in our hands.
