How we are helping left-behind children in China rural areas
We are a group of passionate designers and software engineers from ThoughtWorks. With our intelligence and professional knowledge, we are determined to solve real problems from real people.
In July 2015, we visited and conducted an in-the-field research at two villages in Bazhong area, Sichuan province.
We visited local villagers’ cottages, their chicken farm, the village primary school and other facilities. To have a deeper understanding of the local life, group interviews were organised with villagers to discuss the grain production, family relationships, and how women and children were treated. A design workshop with a wider audience was also organised at the centre square in one village. During the design workshop, we helped local villages analyse and design the whole process of how a family chicken farm would work, from the very first step of eggs incubation, to the final step of chicken distribution channels.
The journey to solve real problems for local villagers continued after we returned to office in Chengdu. Design thinking and agile software development methodology were combined to further analyse what we have saw and heard in the village. Innovative designs were inspired, discussed and developed for three active groups of people in rural area: women, left-behind children and educational volunteers.
Left-behind children are those who live in the villages while their parents are working far away from them, in big cities. Without the company from their parents, left-behind children are lonely and depressed.
We have a strong feeling that one of the design outcomes, a low-cost IoT device, may re-create the emotional link between two parties. With a working prototype completed and a detailed in-the-field testing plan ready, we are eager to return to the villages next year with this device.
We are excited to share the idea and its future plan with you. Please join us, help us improve the design and support us by donating 1 RMB to our campaign with Tencent. With 1001 donators, we will be able to get financial support from Tencent and return to the village in 2016.
