Chapter Two

Our world is quickly shifting to a to online news. Reports stated that in just one year online consumption increased by 17.1 percent and all other types of media declined. However, despite predictions of the future extinction of newspapers and television, two well-trusted journalists wrote that they will not diminish altogether but they will play diminished roles.

Traditionalists, Integrators, Net-newsers and the disengaged make up those who consume news and ultimately affect the future of journalism.

Traditionalists are older and consume news mainly through television, whereas the integrators receive news from both legacy media and the Internet. Many net-newsers are young and will more likely read blogs and use technology for viewing news. The disengaged is known for their low levels of new interest.

Some shift in media patterns may be due to society increasing distrust of the legacy media such as CNN and Fox News.

One major problem in media today is audience fragmentation. As the growth of media outlets expands, the audiences are sliced into smaller fragments. In spite of the audiences diminishing numbers, consumers play a role in not only the measurement but in the new that is reported as well. Citizen journalism is becoming increasingly popular as the rise in smartphones and tablets increases.

I believe that there will be even more ways to consume news in my future because technology is changing and updating rapidly. I will have to stay up-to-date with the latest and most popular form of viewing news so that I may better relate with my audience. I agree with the writing in the book that online media is the man source of news gathering, but the use of newspapers and television will not become extinct.
