Virgin Mobile’s Announces Three Unlimited Data Plans

It’s been a while since Virgin Mobile has had any big announcements that is, until a few days ago. Virgin Mobile, which runs on the Sprint network, announced three new “unlimited” rate plans offering ample amounts of data for reasonable prices. These new unlimited rate plans are geared towards the needs of customers who are seeking good service without the long-term commitment.

The three plans offer customers different data amounts for various prices as well as unlimited talk and text. Customers can choose from a $30 plan giving customers 500 MB of data, $40 for 4 GB of data, or a $50 plan giving those 6 GB of data. Customers who need additional data can purchase more in $5 (1 GB) or $10 (2 GB) increments. When comparing these new plans with their predecessors, the $40 plan is a better value than $45 for 3 GB but for data-heavy users, they may end up paying more in the end. For example, 8 GB of data originally cost $55 per month whereas now it costs $60 for the same amount.

Prepaid carriers such as Virgin Mobile, Cricket Wireless, and MetroPCS are trying to stay afloat in the competitive market which typically has high customer turnover rates. By increasing data allotments and adding features such an international calling or unlimited music streaming, prepaid carriers are trying to keep their subscribers and peak the interests of others who are not interested in long-term commitments.

With these new unlimited data plans, there are no hoops to jump through but is a slight catch. You only get certain amounts of high speed data per month and if you use up more than your allotment, your data speed crawls at 2G until the following month. Even with the option to purchase additional data, data heavy users may end up paying more in the end. Just be sure that you’re interested in this deal, that you pay attention to your data usage and only get the amount that you actually need to save yourself some money in the end.
