The Sandman is an iconic series of DC’s Vertigo line of comics. The series has been written by Neil Gaiman and is currently in the works to be made into a movie with minds like David S. Goyer, Gaiman himself and Joseph Gordon-Levitt at the helm.

I’m going to talk about the protagonist of the series, his family and some of his adventures. But firstly, I’ll answer the question that you seek to be answered.

Who is The Sandman?

The Sandman has many names, he is referred to as Dream by his kin, while known as Morpheus to others. Dreams inception was when the first dreams were had by sentient lifeforms and hence, is one of the oldest gods in existence. His appearance changes depending on who’s watching and what culture and era they belong to. Furthermore, his eyes are known to be as two bright stars staring from the dark veil where eyes lie.

“I walk across the dreaming sands under the pale moon: through the dreams of countries and cities, past dreams of places long gone and times beyond recall.”

Dream, in Brief Lives

Dream as his title suggests, is the lord of the dream realm where he controls dreams and can manipulate them at will. His entrapment by cultists for 70 years in the first issue of The Sandman, led to people being put into a permanent coma and some into a state of insomnia as the balance of the dream realm had been shifted. Depicted to be one of the few characters with nigh-omnipotency in the DC Comics Universe, he is well-respected and gravely feared among the mortals who know him.

Dream is one of the seven members of the Endless family and the youngest male among them

Adventures

In his first appearance, we see Dream trapped by occultists seeking to gain power by enslaving him. After escaping, he seeks his items that he lost to regain his strength. Dream is canon in the DC Comics Universe and hence has had numerous encounters with some characters within the universe. Such as;

John Constantine

Jonathon Crane

J’onn J’onzz

William Shakespeare

I’d love to talk more about The Sandman’s unique narrative and how intricately the stories make holistic sense, but that would mean spoiling the fun for most readers. Hence, I’ll leave you with just one final image as a sample to let you encompass how interesting and fantastic Neil Gaiman’s writing can be and what I hope I receive from the upcoming flick.

P.s.: I did this as a college assignment.
