Physicians do tend to also perpetrate this myth. When I was in high school (and still a virgin), I had my first gynecological exam and I distinctly remember the nurse saying, “You’re not a virgin.” When I told her I was, she told me that the hymen was torn, implying that she didn’t believe me.

I honestly didn’t think much about it then, but looking back now I realize that could have had a more profound impact. Luckily we’re starting to have more open conversations about these things, although there’s still a long way to go.
