Interview with Slivereign
On our third edition of Catalyze’s series of interviews #MeetTheChampions, we feature the NFT artist Slivereign.
This 22-year-old self-taught artist is revolutionizing the #NFTart with a completely new approach.
Don’t miss her unique vision of art through psychology & psychedelia. Because art is just another way to understand and cope with life! 🙃
1. Can you tell us about your background, and what led you to become an artist?
I am a self-taught artist with hyper-focused line work and extensive detailing driven by meditative and anxiety alleviation practices. Currently, I’m the NFT unit lead at Deca4 Advisory, a blockchain studio.
I majored in Psychology and later went on to work with combat veterans. For the longest time, I also trained as a competitive tennis player and went on to compete at International Tennis Federation and Women’s Tennis Association tournaments. In hindsight, I’ve been a creator my whole life, but it’s only over the last 4–5 years that I have paid far more attention to building my own form of artistic representation.
2. As a self-taught artist, where did you learn your technique? Who did inspire you?
During my work tenure, the administration of art as a medium of anxiety alleviation helped me understand the tremendous scope line work holds in controlling breathing patterns. Inspired by that, I built my own niche, an amalgamation of cognition and patterns. The majority of my art is driven by the stories and perspectives I gained as part of working with war veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
3. What do you try to express with your art? Why do you choose psychedelia instead of other techniques?
I believe each piece depicts a different set of schools of thought and cognitive functions. Through some, I aim to embed concepts of Yin and Yang, mortality to immortality sequences, Rorschach techniques, and mental thought patterns. It starts with a single line on paper and goes on to craft itself in a state of flow.
As a genre, psychedelia is extremely fascinating. Dwellings from mystical experiences, awakening, subconscious awareness and the history of abstract psychedelia have always made me appreciate an array of life and art forms!
4. What makes an artist successful in the Crypto Art scene?
Passion! As an artist, the intersection of technology and art helped me develop a holistic view of building my brand and narrating my own story.
Artists now have the opportunity to be their own managers, marketers, creative designers and much more. Beyond that, success is highly subjective. Staying consistent helps, but driving a balance between commercializing your art and not losing the intent to create is crucial.
5. How do you envision the future of NFTs?
We’re still far from decentralization and the ability for each and every artist to make a lifetime of royalties. But, NFTs drive innovation and that is bound to happen in the foreseeable future. Without restricting it to merely art, NFTs will inevitably take over verticals across real estate, entertainment, supply chain, clean tech initiatives, social fundraising and much more!
6. Who are your favorite artists in the NFT space?
There are far too many artists I’ve discovered owing to crypto art and NFTs, and each of them has excelled in their own artistic genres.
As someone who works with hyper-focused line work that takes quite a bit of patience and time, I really look up to Tim Maxwell. But the amount of talent in the space is insurmountable!
7. What piece of advice would you give to artists who are only starting with NFTs?
Patience is key. Interacting with fellow artists always helps, and don’t be afraid of asking questions and experimenting with new mediums and technologies.
