How do I get creative?

Before anything, just remember thanks to wikipedia what creativity is.

Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea, a scientific theory, a musical composition or a joke) or a physical object (such as an invention, a literary work or a painting).”

I am not here to teach you how to become creative, but to share how I get creative. Being creative helps me becoming productive, efficient.Could we say creativity is productivity? Depends on your job.

I think creativity is a personal formula where you need to find your own factors.

So creativity is not smoking weed (well in some cases that might help) or drinking too much alcohol.

Those are my factors:

Self motivation:
It will sounds weird to you but I strongly think self motivation is the most important thing.
Sad, it is so underestimated…

I have a little notebook where I write down all the quotations that inspire me. I have so many. I try to read some every morning.
But one of my favorite is this one: “I understand you don’t know how to resolve it, but if you knew, how would you do it?”

It helps me to be more confident, to set my mind on “machine mode”. I feel strong. I feel like nothing will resist me. This seems weird I know but this is truly empowerment.

I also like telling myself “Maybe you have issues, but you are happy in what you do, and you are free. Some people aren’t so lucky.”

The place:
Where I work is important. I am that kind of person who needs to change air often. I can’t stay at the office two days long.. I need to have different ambiance, to see new things, to be stimulated. To be in quiet places where nothing will disturb me.

Music:
I like working with music it helps me to focus. But this not compulsory, sometime I don’t need music. Depends.
I have noticed that I am more creative and productive when I listen to music I know. Because when I listen to music I don’t know, my brain is focusing on it, trying to forecast the next lyrics or rythme. It is stupid but that’s the way I work.
What funny is that I can listen to any kind of music. I don’t care.

Planning:
Through readings, I took one trick which is “plan what you do”. Putting down things on a todo list is not enough. Write down when you are going to do it and how long will it take. This will set your brain on this task for the time you need. “Ok now I need to be creative for the next two hours”. This works pretty well..

Pomodoro one:
This goes with planning, It’s a simple tool that helps me to think “ok you have 30 minutes work ahead”. I really like it!

Reading:
One thing very important is to keep reading books. Whether there are stories or professional books, it gives me content I don’t have in a normal day. It gives me fresh ideas, and permits me to brainstorm on issues I have.

Time:
As I know myself, I know I am creative in the morning, and from 6pm to 8pm. So basically it is 5 to 6 hours of creativity. It depends on you. But you can train for it.

Sleep:
One final advice, sleep. Don’t work until late, you are not productive. Courage is to stop when you see you are not productive at all. You’ll figure it out next day in 5 minutes with a fresh brain.

As I told you being creative is a formula. If you don’t gather your owns factors you will never be as creative as you can be.

So first thing to do: Know yourself better.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
