On Our New Name and Logo

The Caux Round Table is pleased to announce a reinvigoration of our brand and efforts. Our most obvious change is our organization’s name. The Caux Round Table will now be known as the “Caux Round Table For Moral Capitalism” (CRT). While the CRT endeavors to improve many aspects of morality in culture internationally, we feel that this more clearly puts to the forefront exactly what the CRT works towards and seeks to accomplish.

Since its first meeting in 1986, the core Caux Round Table leaders and its successive boards have grappled with the challenge of a name — the word Caux ties up to a place and a founding tradition which gives us granular particularity; the words “round table” precisely indicate what we do best — assemble round tables to stimulate leaders and leadership ideas. But all together, the name has not been obviously descriptive of our vision and mission.

Our board of directors, therefore, has decided to add the words “For Moral Capitalism” to the name to make clear our objectives and the scope of our work. They have also approved a new logo to accompany the new name.

Our new logo is now the one you see above. The circle is based upon a traditional Japanese Zen Buddhist Enso circle. The Enso in Zen Buddhism historically symbolizes enlightenment, strength and elegance. The circle is open, showing that it is incomplete, allowing for movement and development. This, in many ways, carries over directly to our work at promoting a more moral capitalism. A moral capitalism that promotes wealth for all is an elegant system that creates inherently strong organizations. However, there is still much work to do — the circle is incomplete — there is a need to allow for movement within our current system as we strive to develop and more fully implement moral capitalism.

As our Global Executive Director, Steve Young, once wrote:

“The challenge of moral capitalism is to tip the balance of wealth creation toward humanity’s more noble possibilities and away from the dynamics of more brutish behavior.”

With our organization’s new name and logo — and with you, our network continuing to aid us in our efforts — we believe we have taken another great step towards achieving those goals.
