July 23

Yes, yes, I know the schedule says Pullman, Washington, but I spent most of the day in Idaho. A quick geography lesson: Pullman is really close to the border of Idaho and Washington. How are they different? No income tax in WA; not the case in ID. Lentils are found in ID, not WA. And duh marijuana is in fact legal in Washington (but only if you’re over 21). I’ve seen a few shops in the area already. But ever since doing Wings Over Washington, I’ve become a pro at everything in the state, so now I will give a quick overview of what I learned today about Idaho.

  1. Elk Creek Falls has multiple waterfalls, and is a very nice place to just sit with your feet in the water and eat some chicken salad. But don’t use the restroom because there is very full fly tape hanging from the ceiling and someone left their underwear in the corner.
  2. There is not only a Princeton and a Harvard in Idaho (one guess as to which one I liked better) but there is also a Santa.
  3. Idaho, in addition to being known for their lentils (it’s the lentil capital of the country, and according to locals, the world!) and potatoes, they’re also known for their huckleberries! I tasted them today in a great huckleberry shake.
  4. Apparently white supremacy groups still exist in Idaho. Not a funny note, just an alarming one.
  5. A wheat field looks like a fun place to frolick, when in fact, wheat is actually quite sharp and nearly impossible to walk in.
  6. Much of the landscape includes rolling hills in Idaho, peppered with towns with populations less than 500 (lowest we saw today was 125). Makes me wonder what life is like in those places.
  7. I visited the famous Moscow (pronounced “mos-coe”) bagel shop, and my bagel will be featured on their instagram (!!)
  8. Growlers are a thing here. And Corrie and Scott were kind enough to gift me with one of my own, so now I have a little bit of eastern WA/western ID to bring back to the east coast with me.

Tomorrow morning I pick up my mother from Kalispell, Montana (and will lose an hour of time) before heading off to Glacier National Park. I’ve heard nothing but fabulous things about this park, so I can’t wait to see for myself!

xoxo
