Takeaways from an excellent session at Romance Writer’s of America on the important of conflict by New York Times Bestselling author @ShirleyJump. Conflict should not be easily resolved.

  • The best conflict stems for core emotional issues.
  • No one wants to read arguments on a page incessantly.
  • The stakes must get higher and higher at every stage.
  • Conflict forces the hero/heroine to change in order to attain what they really want.
  • Conflict is both internal and external and is in opposition to the hero/heroine’s goal.
  • Tension is your “pit in the gut feeling” worrying about what will happen to the characters.
