RWS Halloween Event Publicity Stunt Gone Wrong, Triggered Sensitive Netizens

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has received disapproval for its publicity campaign involving a fictitious collapse of a shopping mall but decides to “stands by its concept“.

Woah, RWS, one huge gangster. All in the name of marketing.

This is what occurred.

Have you seen the three memorials around town with names, photos and flowers dedicated to victims of the Southpoint Mall collapse on 17 August?

I was a victim of that. I mean I’m not a ghost. I’m still alive.

I just thought the publicity stunt was real. But then the name ‘Southpoint Mall’ did not ring a bell.

So, yes, this marketing tactic is cooked up by RWS for their Halloween Horror Nights which will take place over 14 nights from 29 September to 29 October.

As the title of this article suggests, this publicity ploy has backfired because netizens were expecting something more.

Nope, just kidding. They weren’t in favor of this idea at all.

Adjunct lecturer Felix Cheong, 52, who came across one of the memorials in Bras Basah, told The Straits Times that he found the campaign “insensitively and tastelessly done”.

He further adds that such memorial walls are seen around the world, at actual disasters. So it is “insensitive to victims of real events and their families.”

Actually, I agree with what Mr. Cheong said. It may be a figure of fun to us because…

It hasn’t happened to us. #truestory

According to Google search results, there’s actually a Southpoint Shopping Mall in McDonough, Georgia which opened in 2008. McDonough is apparently a city in Henry County, Georgia, United States.

Sigh. So even if such installations are “eye-catching, original and unconventional”, they are pretty thoughtless, don’t you feel so?

So, is it a case of oversensitive self-righteous Singaporeans making noise online, or is it really insensitive?

But if you’re not interested in this, maybe this would make you jump in fear (or elation) instead: the attraction apparently allows you to “kill” zombies.
