What happened? A gluten tolerance pill was developed at the University of Alberta.

When it happened? December 2015.

What happened? The World Allergy Organization (WAO) had a symposium about food allergies and the microbiome.

Why it’s news? A bunch of uber smart scientist got together in Miami (of course, who wouldn’t want to be in Miami in December) to present research about the food allergy link to one’s gut. This scientific beach party means the world is starting to take food allergy causes and cures very, very seriously.

A Tricorder for Gluten:

When it happened? October 2015.

What happened? The startup 6Sensorlabs announced pre-sales of their Nima sensor.

Why it’s news? This little futuristic device detects trace levels of gluten in food for safety and will be available for other types of food allergies as well. Restaurants could potentially do a quick scan of a plate before it leaves the kitchen so no give-backs and a person could go to a dinner party without having to carry their interrogation light to “question” the host about what’s in the meal.

When it happened? February 2015.

What happened? The British LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) study found that by feeding peanuts to high risk young children it could possibly prevent them from developing a peanut allergy. Annnd…feeding peanuts (under medical supervision) to people with a peanut allergy could increase their tolerance to the nut. Nutty, right?

Why it’s news? Eating peanuts could prevent and (potentially) reduce peanut allergies. Holy cow. Holy peanut!
