Cerebral Palsy Introduction
Cerebral palsy is a condition occurs after some injury in the immature brain. It affects movement, posture, and coordination between muscles and brain. This injury happens before, during or after the birth of an infant. Mostly, it occurs 0 to 2 years of child. 2 to 3 child affected by cerebral palsy in every live birth of 1000. It is a non-progressive disorder and cerebral palsy cannot be cured. In 1862, William little, a British surgeon identify the cerebral palsy first time.
Types of Cerebral Palsy
There are various types of cerebral palsy. Spastic cerebral palsy is one of the most common types of cerebral palsy. In which 70 to 80% children affected with spastic. It is also classified into monoplegia, hemiplegia, triplegia, quadriplegia, and diplegia cerebral palsy depending upon the affected limb of the child.
Monoplegia- In monoplegia cerebral palsy only one part of the body affected for example either one hand or one leg.
Hemiplegia- In hemiplegia cerebral palsy one side of the body affected either right side of the body or left side of the body.
Triplegia- In Triplegia cerebral palsy both leg and one hand affected.
Quadriplegia- In quadriplegia cerebral palsy both hand and both leg, trunk, neck, and face affected.
Diplegia- In diplegia cerebral palsy both hand and both leg affected (both leg more affected than the both hand)
Causes of cerebral palsy
There are various causes of cerebral palsy. There are some common causes of cerebral palsy given as below:
- Bleeding in the immature brain
- Decreased blood supply to the brain
- Cyst formation
- Forced head movement (shake)
Symptoms of cerebral palsy
There are various symptoms of cerebral palsy. There are some common symptoms of cerebral palsy given as below:
- Absence of movement/kick inside mother abdomen
- Absence of birth cry
- Absence/ difficulty in breast feeding
- Blue/yellow colour skin during/after birth
- Newborn ICU admission
- Not maintain head in erect position/ delaying growth and development
- Stiff/loosen child
- Crossed leg
- Fisted hand
- Fits
