Goodness, thank you. For some reason, white people tend to think that everything is created for us: entitlement in its purest form. Some look at #Formation and feel threatened because it doesn’t include us. I just want to gather all these people up and pinch their little cheeks while softly cooing, “Stfu.”
I had to read up on the majority of the messages included in the music video. Yeah, I’m embarrassed to say that the majority of it went way over my head. But then again, the experiences depicted in this video weren’t mine. My knowledge of Black History is just a little more expanded from the morsel we’re taught in Texas schools (something I’m not proud to admit and am currently working on improving). While I am in the South, I’ll never even come close to understanding what it’s like to be a black woman here. My job here is to quietly appreciate what she has done, then maybe kick a few white shins when they get ornery.
This song wasn’t written for us. The music video wasn’t created for us. We’re blessed with spectatorship. We should learn what we can from this experience, change our hearts/minds, and do what we can to continue amplifying powerful messages like Beyoncé’s.
