You are lucky if you worked with these kind of bosses in your career…
There are millions of write ups out there to categorize bosses. The autocratic, democratic, the angels, the demons and various other terms used to describe them. There are equal number of write ups to help you dealing with them.
But it is good to have a variety of bosses in your career. In my opinion your career is bound to grow, if you have worked with these kinds. If you are open to learning, and make a conscious effort to practice your learning. I had the opportunity to work with these kinds very early in my career.
He may not be working with you on a daily basis. He may be way up above the ladder to even know you exist. But there are a few, who ooze inspiration. A simple “Hello. How are you doing?” across the hallway will give you goose bumps. These are the guys you look up in awe! They are they ones you aspire to be some day.
They make grand statements about your work and like to bask in the glory of it. Yet secretly wishing they were wrong. You have this urge to prove them wrong. You want their acceptance in some weird way. You want them to appreciate you. You know that their appreciation, while is in short supply, will be genuine if you did a good job. Their appreciation is like a certificate of sorts that you are good at your work. Others at office get jealous, if this kind of boss has a good opinion about you.
Honestly, if you have this kind of a boss, it is the easiest way to your next promotion. But this comes with a caveat. You may not learn anything useful. You will be able to get away with sub standard work. They will believe anything you say. You can do the right thing and be truthful, or take the easy way & cheat to your benefit. The choice is yours… the question is “would you have a clear conscience?”
They are the cool guys. Everyone in office wants to work with them. You can basically take on the world, with their support. Even if the project you work on bombs, they will probably celebrate with you. They will let you experiment your ideas, try out new ways of doing things, and be OK if you make mistakes. You will learn a great deal from this boss if you are keen.
You do not have the pressure of appraisals. This is a phase of life, where you learn by experiment. Your mistakes will have a consequence. But you will have the courage to face them.
The thought provoker
They know what you are good at and then give your projects that you are NOT good at. Put you in the path of obvious failure. If you have the grit and will, they are willing to work with you to convert your weakness to your strength.
They will take you and turn you inside out. They are good to work with to reinvent yourself, build new skills & break the glass ceiling.
For these bosses, life is larger than work. They become friends over a period of time. Families know each other. Kids play together. They will have genuine concern about you, beyond work. They will make you a better person.
All these bosses however demand one thing. TRUST. None of them work to make you look like a failure. Their basic goal is to help you succeed. Their methods may be different and questionable. But if you are willing to put in your part of the effort, You will come out strong. Am sure you can put a name to one to these kind of bosses, in your working career.
