Model/Scale

My inspiration for creating my model, is Constant Nieuwenhuys. My inspiration is New Babylon.
The project New Babylon is a very strong political project. It’s a 20 years project, the longest project, large scale and it’s all about the inside of it. Constant made this project to show the audience the life that we live today, full of violence, exclusion, a world of hyper connectivity, internet, fluidity of change. In his project, he was criticizing the society and was against it. The book “The Society of the Spectacle” states “The whole life of those societies in which modern conditions of productions prevail presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. All that once was directly lived has become mere representation” (Guy Debord 1988, p.12).
The techniques that Constant used in his project were thin long lines, many ladders with short and long size, thickness in the bottom and not all lines are straight.
In my model that I created, I applied Constant’s techniques.
My model is 30 by 30 cm. I used balsa wood and then I sprayed it with grey spray paint, to show as a result a heavy material, like Constant’s project. I also used ladders in my model. I used horizontal lines to show horizontal architecture for a horizontal society. I was trying to express in my model equality and freedom like in Constant’s project, by using horizontal lines, thin lines and ladders.
In my photography, I photographed this angle to express what I am trying to convey to the audience with the techniques that I used in my model. In the photo, I am showing roughness, low angle to show danger, black and white to show fear from society.
In conclusion, I learned, discovered Constant’s project, therefore I applied his concept and techniques in my model.
