Golden State Warriors, Love or Klay?

The Golden State Warriors have put themselves in a great position to be an unstoppable team, but they have some decisions to make. Back in 2012 they made another tough decision when they chose to keep Klay Thompson rather than put him in the running for James Harden. Although they may have questioned that decision at times, Thompson has turned out to be a great player who defends well. Since they made that move to keep Thompson, Golden State has done a good job at building a backcourt around him. Now they are at a point where they can really win a lot of games because all of their key players are in their primes. However, something may throw off the team they have built. They have an opportunity to get Kevin Love, but only if they trade Thompson to the Timberwolves. Here is how such a deal would go down. If the Warriors wanted to take the risk they could sing love in the 2015 offseason when he becomes a free agent. However, with that move they would need to get rid of David Lee’s $15 million salary to have enough budget room to get Love. This route would also mean that whoever gets him for 2014-2015 isn’t impressive enough to keep him there. That has happened before and could happen again, but it doesn’t solve the money issue for wooing Love over.
The Warriors may consider trading Thompson because his new contract for 2015-16 will be expensive, a cool $10 million. Another variable weighing on the Golden State is that Love is one of the top 10 players in the league with exceptional skills in 3-point shooting, rebounding, heady passing and post-up. The Timberwolves may not have many chances to bring their team to a top-eight spot in the West. Love would really help their chances. He may not be a Durant or a LeBron, but he is just a step down from them and could bring them the extra boost of talent that they need to catapult the team that they have carefully built. Although it would be hard to say goodbye to a great player like Thompson, it is not worth it for the Warriors passing up Love to hold onto him.
