Legislative Leaders Propose a $1 BILLION Tax Hike

Speaker of the House Mike Busch and Senate President Mike Miller say they’ve figured out a “blueprint” for the future of Maryland’s public schools. Sounds great, right?

The problem is — their proposal calls for a $1 BILLION tax hike on Maryland taxpayers to pay for it!

Remember Martin O’Malley’s 47 consecutive tax increases, totaling more than $8 billion dollars?

Remember the $547 million in taxes that Democrats decided to keep last year instead of returning it to state taxpayers?

Remember the casinos and racetracks that were supposed to fund education?

Where has all that money gone? Why now — when Busch and Miller decide they want to invest in Maryland schools — do they come BACK to taxpayers and ask for more? The answer is: their years of tax-and-spend policies are catching up to them.

And why — when all this funding for education is supposedly needed — did Maryland Democrats vote AGAINST Maryland students and vote FOR giving taxpayer-funded scholarships to illegal immigrants?

Don’t get us wrong…we are all for investing in Maryland’s students, teachers, and public schools. However, Marylanders are taxed enough already. We can’t afford another BILLION in taxes just over the next two years.

And any “plan” championed by the corrupt and power-hungry leaders of the state teachers union isn’t a “plan” at all — it’s a get-rich-quick-scheme for union leaders, and it does NOTHING to address issues of accountability, fraud, and waste in Maryland’s schools.

Maryland needs a REAL blueprint for the future of Maryland schools.

This blueprint needs to involve …

— Accountability for how funds are spent, teachers are hired, and administrators are paid

— Auditing of school finances

— A review of standardized testing and how “success” is measured

— A plan for updating and innovating classrooms, teaching strategies, and resources offered to students, parents, and teachers

We can’t just keep throwing money at the problem — especially when we don’t keep track of how that money is spent yet continue asking taxpayers to foot the bill.

This bill (SB1030/HB1413) will be considered in committee hearings this week, and legislative leaders will RUSH to pass it before the cross-over date on Monday.

We have to let legislative leaders know that we want them to fund our schools WITHOUT huge tax hikes! Taxpayers are NOT a piggy-bank they can break every time they need more money.
