Murphy’s Law is a popular adage that states “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” This principle is often cited in situations where things unexpectedly go wrong, and is a reminder that we should always be prepared for the worst.

Origins of Murphy’s Law

The origins of Murphy’s Law can be traced back to the 1950s, when it was first coined by an engineer named Edward A. Murphy Jr. He was working on a rocket-sled project and one of his colleagues suggested that they should measure the acceleration of the sled by attaching an accelerometer to it. Murphy, in his impatience, responded with the now famous words,

“If there’s more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then he will do it that way.”
