Ah….Chocolate. The elixir of happiness and longevity. Whenever I’m feeling down, I always long for the smooth, luxurious taste of dark chocolate in my palate. Phenylethylamine is sometimes called “the love drug”, because it arouses feelings similar to those that occur when one is in love. Another neurotransmitter, serotonin, is a mood-lifter, as well. One chemical that causes the release of serotonin into the brain is tryptophan, found in (wait for it!) chocolate.

Here’s 10 other crazy facts about CHOCOLATE that you didn’t know;

  1. Apparently chocolate melting in one’s mouth can cause a more intense and longer-lasting pleasure than kissing. Nice.

2. The word chocolate comes from “Xocolatl,” the Aztec word that means “bitter water.”

3. you’re effectively reducing the risk of heart disease by one third when you eat dark chocolate EVERYDAY.

4.Don’t want to burst your bubble, but white chocolate technically isn’t chocolate. It contains no cocoa solids or cocoa liquor.

5. Eating chocolate can help prevent tooth decay and works as an anti-bacterial agent.

6. Hershey produces more than 80 million chocolate “kisses” every day.

7. A chocolate river exists

Well it did, back in 1971. The famous chocolate river Augustus Gloop almost drowned in in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factoryfilm was made 15,000 gallons of water mixed with chocolate and cream.

With all the cream, the river spoiled fairly quickly and the cast revealed it left a terrible smell.

Percy Spence, a scientist working on WWII radar and weapons projects, happened to be a big fan of chocolate. After spending some time near a formidable device called a magnetron, he noticed the chocolate bar he’d been keeping in his pocket had turned to mush.

He quickly put two and two together and realized magnetrons might be able to heat up food at incredibly fast rates, and voilà, the microwave oven was born.

9. Napoleon, a military general who became the first emperor of France, always carried chocolate with him, which he ate as a pick-me-up whenever he needed an energy boost. (Entrepreneurs, CEOs! Time to stock up on chocolate bars!)

10. It is observed that chocolate cravings cannot be satisfied by any sweet/candy other than chocolate itself (no surprises there).
