Thesis: The Next Great Consumer App/Network (Mobile or Web)
These days, it seems like everyone thinks consumer mobile and web is dead. This is likely from a combination of factors:
First, the biggest players — Facebook leading the charge — are ever more mindful of upstarts and fast following whatever works. They will guard their platforms.
Second, the structure of both the Apple and Google app stores has created a self-reinforcing cycle.
Third, there hasn’t been a recent large, enduring hardware shift similar to the original smartphone market — a wave that began nearly ten years ago.
Yet, in spite of these challenges, we believe that consumer mobile is not logically in its end state. How could that be? Are individuals not going to install any more new apps? Will consumers not seek new functionality?
So we are looking for bold ideas or early startups in consumer, both mobile and on the web, from entrepreneurs who are not afraid of the biggest players, who are not afraid of the platform gatekeepers, and who can anticipate new competitive shifts, however small these advantages may appear at first.
