Fucking Cancer

Cancer seems to be everywhere. It killed David Bowie, and now Alan Rickman. I have too many friends with this disease; three with breast, one with lung and two with prostate cancer. And I know of a bunch of people within my networks who have loved ones suffering from this dreadful disease.

It really blows.

Cancer is a terrorist attack on our body and soul. It sucks the life out of families and reminds us all how terribly frail and vulnerable we are. As someone who has worked in the biotechnology and cancer industry for decades, I keep hearing about all these wonderful treatments but yet, it seems to be getting worse.

Okay, we have made progress. Childhood cancers are much less deadly than they once were. Certain kinds of breast cancer are more survivable than others. Diagnosing cancer early means a better chance of beating it, but with the trillions of dollars spent around the world looking for a cure, you’d think we’d be further ahead. I know there are those who say cancer is in decline, that we are beating it. But to me, as someone who hangs around cancer science and has also suffered tremendous loses to it, why does it seem to be winning?

I have no idea what comes after this life. Or if there is a god. Or alien races. Some claim to know. Either way, I hope on their next milk run they stop here on earth and tell us how to cure this thing we call cancer. If a god or alien race was that powerful, it’s the least they can do. Because our little group of organisms we call humans need help. Lots of it. Don’t you think?

When I asked someone the other day what David Bowie died of she said ‘fucking cancer’… and I thought… that’s what we should call it: Fucking Cancer. So if you are inclined to prayer, or believe in aliens, ask for a cure to this nasty, mean spirited, inconvenient, obnoxious, painful, blood-sucking, deadly disease… and end, once and for all.. Fucking Cancer.
