Steve Harris is often considered one of the most influential heavy metal bassists. He is the founder of ‘Iron Maiden’, a hugely popular metal group that has sold millions of albums.

Steve Harris was born at Whipps Cross University Hospital, in Leytonstone, England. His father was a truck driver, and his mother worked multiple part-time jobs to provide for Steve, and his three sisters.

In his youth, Steve Harris had been interested in becoming a professional footballer. He had been scouted by Wally St. Pier. Harris had asked to train for West Ham United. However, by his teens, Harris discovered his love for rock music. Harris was a big Beatles fan. His dreams of being a professional footballer was set aside, in favour of his love for music.

Harris attended Leyton Senior High School for Boys, and his studies included architectural drawing. This was something that aided him later in life, as he later worked as an architectural draughtman, while ‘Iron Maiden’ was still in its early days.

When he first started out, Harris was determined to be a drummer. He didn’t have the room for a drum kit in his grandmother’s house, and so he changed course — instead, he decided to take up the bass. He was self-taught, using a Fender Precision model that he’d bought in 1971, for £40.
