The city of Halifax, located in the tiny peninsula maritime province of Nova Scotia, has a great deal of old architecture. Some of the older buildings date back centuries. The city is filled with large stone buildings, old Victorian houses, and newer buildings. It has always held onto its original historical past, having the newer and older buildings stand side by side.

One of the city’s most prominent and iconic landmarks, in Halifax’s historic downtown core, is the Halifax Town clock. The clock tower was first installed on October 20, 1803. It has kept time for Halifax for more than two hundred years. It is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks, and extremely popular with tourists. Out of all the city’s landmarks, the clock is considered one of the most recognizable landmarks. It is one of the oldest buildings in Halifax, and a testament to the city’s military history. In 2004, the clock tower was classified as a Federal Heritage Building.

The Halifax Town Clock goes by a few other names — such as the ‘Citadel Clock Tower’, ‘The Town Clock’, or simply, the ‘Citadel Clock’. Historically, it had also been known as ‘the Garrison Clock’.
