The Unsolved Murder of David Stack

In June, 1976, eighteen-year-old David Stack had decided to hitchhike from Broomfield, Colorado, to California, so that he could visit his siblings. Unfortunately, David only made it as far as Wendover, Utah. He was murdered on June 9, 1976. A day after he was murdered, his body was discovered in a Tooele County landfill. He had been shot twice in the head, though this fact was withheld from the public. His official cause of death was homicide, and his murder remains unsolved to this day.

When David Stack’s body was found in the landfill, it was unidentified at the time. Authorities tried to gather as much information about the deceased man, so they could try to discover who the murder victim was. The police had started asking around, and learned that the young man had been seen in Wendover, Utah, at about 3 PM the day before the body was discovered. This was the last known sighting.

Upon inspecting the body at the morgue, the authorities learned that their John Doe was about 17–22 years old, with dark shoulder-length brown hair, a mustache, beard, and brown eyes. He had been wearing a tan shirt, a black belt, and a pair of jeans with patches. There were no shoes found at the scene. The man had been 5’9”, weighing about 170 lbs, with O positive blood type.
