On April 20, 1990, seventeen-year-old Christopher Kerze told his parents that he had a really bad headache, and had decided to stay home from school that day. His father had to go on a business trip. Christopher’s mother gave her son some medicine for his headache, before leaving the house.

When they came home hours later, Kerze’s parents were surprised to discover that their son was not home. Their vehicle, a blue 1988 Dodge Caravan, was missing, and the family dog was running around loose.

They found a note from their son. It said the following message: ‘Mom, something important came up, and feeling somewhat better. Back by six (unless I get lost). Love, Chris.’

The Kerzes thought that the note was unusual, especially noticing that the word ‘lost’ had been underlined twice. Mrs. Kerze thought that the underlined word was a reference to the fact that her son sometimes got lost while driving, because he was bad with following directions. The Kerzes never saw their son again. The Kerzes also discovered that Christopher had withdrawn $200 from his savings account the day that he’d disappeared.
