For me, your theory seems most prevalent in the field of music. I recently heard a new release by Paul McCartney and although admittedly, I’ve never been a big ‘Paul fan’, the whole song is nothing but a sophmoric cliché and I thought, this is the same guy that wrote “Let It Be”? I would have expected more from Ringo Starr. Of course there are exceptions; I think Van Morrison is still putting out fresh and relevant work, for instance. An issue established musicians face is not getting airplay of fresh work; if it is fanning the embers of mediocrity, such as Sir Paul, however, it is understandable.
