Embracing Sleep Deprivation, Coffee and God’s Word

I’VE COME TO ACCEPT THAT I GENERALLY DON’T SLEEP MUCH WHETHER I CAN OR NOT. FOR YEARS, I GOT UP AT 4:30, WORKED OUT AND MADE MY WAY DOWNTOWN TO WORK BY 7 AM. NOW THAT I CAN TECHNICALLY ROLL OUT OF BED WHENEVER I CHOOSE, MY DAY STILL TYPICALLY BEGINS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 3–6 AM WHEN I GET UP FOR MY UMPTEENTH TRIP TO THE RESTROOM (SMALL-BLADDER CULPRIT) AND JOT DOWN SOME NOTES THAT ARE RELENTLESSLY RUMMAGING AROUND IN MY BRAIN, REFUSING TO BE PUT OFF UNTIL A MORE REASONABLE HOUR. MY THOUGHTS TYPICALLY REVOLVE AROUND THE NEED TO WRITE DOWN AN INSPIRATION, A BURDEN THAT NEEDS TO BE TRANSFERRED TO A PRAYER OR ADDITIONS TO MY ONGOING TO-DO LIST. I HAVE YET TO FIGURE OUT WHY THINGS COME SO CRYSTAL CLEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT THAT DON’T SEEP THROUGH AT ANY OTHER TIME OF MY DAY. I SUPPOSE IT IS THE ONLY TIME THERE’S ENOUGH ROOM TO SQUEEZE THEIR WAY INTO THE OVERCROWDED SPACE IN MY HEAD. I USUALLY MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO GO BACK TO BED IF IT’S BEFORE 5 BUT IF I’M UP FOR LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES THE COFFEE POT STARTS CALLING MY NAME. HOW I LOVE MY FIRST MORNING CUP OF JOE…AND MY SECOND AND SOMETIMES MY THIRD. I ADMIT I’VE BECOME QUITE THE COFFEE SNOB, IF YOU CAN CALL MY AT-HOME JAVA CHOICE, HEB’S FRENCH ROAST (KEURIG), BEING A SNOB. MY SECOND CUP IS OFTEN MY #1 FAVORITE, AN AMERICANO WITH COCONUT MILK WHILE I’M WRITING AT MY NEIGHBORHOOD STARBUCKS JUST DOWN THE STREET OR, OF LATE, A NEW CONTENDER, THE DELICIOUS ALMOND MILK CAPPUCCINO AT BARBAZZAR. HMMM…LACK OF SLEEP AND AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF DELICIOUS COFFEE. IS THERE A CONNECTION?

OKAY, WHILE I’VE ENJOYED CHATTING ABOUT MY BELOVED COFFEE, I’M FEELING A SPIRITUAL APPLICATION. IT’S ONE THING TO STRUGGLE WITH SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHTS…BUT I’M MORE CONCERNED WITH HOW MANY OF US MAY BE SLEEPING THROUGH OUR DAYS. IN GOD’S KINGDOM, EACH DAY BRINGS NEW MERCIES AND ADVENTURES THAT AWAIT, PEOPLE TO TOUCH, A GOOD WORD TO SHARE, A SMILE, A HUG, A PRAYER. I DON’T WANT US TO MISS GOD’S BEST BY “SLEEP-WALKING!” JUST AS OUR BODIES MAY NEED A JOLT OF CAFFEINE TO STAY IN THE GAME AFTER A LONG NIGHT, WE NEED AN AMPLE MUG FULL OF THE RICH WORD OF GOD AND A CONNECTION WITH HIM IN PRAYER TO JUMP-START THE DAY AND BE AWAKE TO THE OPPORTUNITIES HE IS PRESENTING ALONG OUR PATH. WHATEVER OUR SLEEP SCHEDULE, LADIES, LET’S BE SURE WE ARE ON THE ALERT FOR GOD’S AGENDA, TODAY! I ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO A STUDY ON ALL THE BIBLE VERSES RELATED TO SPIRITUAL SLEEP (GOOGLE MAKES IT EASY), BUT I’LL LEAVE YOU WITH THESE TWO FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND MEDITATION. ARISE AND SHINE, SISTER-LOVE!

ROMANS 13:11–12 DO THIS, KNOWING THE TIME, THAT IT IS ALREADY THE HOUR FOR YOU TO AWAKEN FROM SLEEP; FOR NOW SALVATION IS NEARER TO US THAN WHEN WE BELIEVED. THE NIGHT IS ALMOST GONE, AND THE DAY IS NEAR. THEREFORE LET US LAY ASIDE THE DEEDS OF DARKNESS AND PUT ON THE ARMOR OF LIGHT.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:6–8 SO THEN LET US NOT SLEEP AS OTHERS DO, BUT LET US BE ALERT AND SOBER. FOR THOSE WHO SLEEP DO THEIR SLEEPING AT NIGHT, AND THOSE WHO GET DRUNK GET DRUNK AT NIGHT. BUT SINCE WE ARE OF THE DAY, LET US BE SOBER, HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF FAITH AND LOVE, AND AS A HELMET, THE HOPE OF SALVATION

DON’T WASTE YOUR HURRICANE!
