The way companies hire people is all wrong

The way the world still views talent — is hugely outdated.

If you look at the way companies advertise their employment opportunities, it’s one-dimensional. If you can’t tick all of the little boxes that are listed as requirements for a particular job, then you’re just not qualified enough.

But human talent is a lot more complicated and dynamic than that. It’s so ironic that most companies are desperately looking to attract unique creative talent to their organisations (out-of-the-box thinkers with entrepreneurial drive), but they still recruit like the Post Office did in 1983.

In light of this shortfall in thinking, this TED talk from Emilie Wapnick: Why some of us don’t have one true calling is an insightful perspective into the complexities of passion in creative people. And a good reason why truly creative people can’t be hired using a standard system of recruitment.

In the future, the functional execution of tasks will be done by AI. What needs to be encouraged and normalised as we head towards that reality is that people are wonderfully multifaceted, something that should be celebrated and encouraged, not schooled out of society.
