Weekly Roundup: Another Successful Year of One Summer Chicago!
The city’s largest summer jobs program employed more than 30,000 youth this summer!
Mayor Emanuel joined One Summer Chicago youth participants in celebrating another successful year of the program, which employed more than 30,000 youth around the city with summer job and internship opportunities.
Youth clocked more than 3.5 million work hours as part of this year’s program, participating in projects ranging from infrastructure jobs and camp counselors; urban agriculture and outdoor forestry projects; to bike repair and office and clerical work.
Through its wide range of opportunities around the city, the program allows youth to hone leadership skills while giving back to the community. The Mayor’s Infrastructure Team — a subset of the program supported by City of Chicago departments — employed nearly 2,000 youth this summer, who made impact on their communities by accomplishing the following:
Painted 5 murals
Painted 327 viaducts
Mulched 3,528 trees
Collected 9,101 debris filled bags
Cleaned 786 mains, 793 lots and 6,470 parkways
Since 2011, Mayor Emanuel has significantly expanded the summer program, more than doubling opportunities while diversifying work opportunities for youths around the city, with nearly 130,000 youth gaining valuable job training and work experience since the program began.

Mayor Emanuel marked the next step in modernizing O’Hare International Airport!
Mayor Emanuel marked the next step in modernizing O’Hare International Airport this week with the groundbreaking of the airport’s newest runway, 9C/27C.
The new runway will be the second largest at O’Hare, and will enhance the passenger experience by reducing delays and increasing the airport’s capacity.
Construction of the runway is slated to support more than 4,900 jobs, and city officials are ensuring local workforce participation is a priority. To this end, there will be three job fairs throughout the city to ensure all residents have a chance to learn about work opportunities.
Once construction is complete, the runway will also balance noise exposure among communities east and west of the airport.
Construction of the runway comes as the city advances Mayor Emanuel’s long-term vision for the airport, called O’Hare 21. Earlier this summer, Mayor Emanuel announced the construction of three hotel development projects at the airport, as well as the intent to work with airlines partners on a multi-billion dollar capital investment program.

Derek Jeter brought his youth leaders to Chicago!
This week, Mayor Emanuel joined Derek Jeter in meeting with 300 youth from Chicago and across the country for a community service project as part of the Jeter’s Leaders youth development program.
Founded by legendary Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, the Jeter’s Leaders program offers youth an outlet to make positive life choices during out of school time by developing leadership skills and giving back to the community.
As part of the annual Jeter’s Leaders National Youth Leadership Conference, 300 youth packed nutritious meals to be shipped to the Chicago Greater Food Depository, providing approximately 170,000 nutritious meals for individuals in need.
The Jeter’s Leaders program aligns with several youth development programs invested in by Mayor Emanuel and the City of Chicago. Just like the Mayor’s One Summer Chicago youth employment program, Jeter’s Leaders harnesses leadership and service as a ladder to college and career success.
The conference, sponsored by Goldman Sachs and a signature initiative by Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation, also provides youth a series of workshops and seminars to help young people to address some of the most critical issues facing them today, including: bullying, cultural diversity, drug and alcohol awareness, healthy lifestyles, and personal and professional development.
