The Electric Revolution

At the turn of the 20th Century, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were competitively inventing new machines and processes to generate electric power. Edison is famous for inventing the light bulb, but long forgotten is his plan to bring electricity to the world using a direct current. Tesla invented a better model for electrical transmission, an alternating current. Where direct currents only flow in one direction, alternating currents flow in multiple directions, which increases both magnitude and transmission range. Today the entire world runs on the alternating electrical current invented by Tesla, which now connects computers all around the world.

U.S. Patent 433,700, ALTERNATING CURRENT ELECTRO MAGNETIC MOTOR, to Tesla (1890).

The rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla during the late 19th and early 20th centuries not only epitomized the clash of scientific minds but also profoundly shaped the modern electrical grid and, by extension, society as a whole. Edison championed the use of direct current (DC), which he successfully employed in his invention of the incandescent light bulb.[1] However, DC’s limitations became apparent as the demand for electricity grew, particularly over long distances. In contrast, Tesla’s advocacy for alternating current (AC) heralded a revolution in electrical transmission.[2] AC’s ability to travel long distances with reduced power loss and its adaptability to varying voltage levels…
