Book Review: My Lobotomy: A Memoir
My Lobotomy: A Memoir by Howard Dully is a book that seemed mildly interesting to me based on the title. I figured I would check it out for something to read (listen to) during breaks between more intriguing reads. Boy, was I surprised.
This book is a fascinating tale of child abuse, malpractice, struggle and love. It moved me viscerally throughout and I couldn’t put it down. I was shaken by story of Howard Dully who became the youngest person to receive a transorbital lobotomy at just 12 years old.
It is at once an indictment of the trust we put into the medical professional but more than that, it is a testament to the absolutely awesome importance of the responsibility we have as parents. The power of ensuring that a child knows he is loved cannot be overstated.
I felt this book in my chest with each paragraph. I felt this book in my heart throughout. This is an important book.
