In the realm of professional coaching, a fundamental principle often upheld is meeting our coaching clients “where they are,” not where we are or where we think they should be. However, when discussing coaching in the context of agile, this approach is slightly modified. We recognize it as “meeting them half a step ahead.”

Why so? Because in agile coaching, we not only act as coaches but also as mentors using agile tools, practices, principles, and values. As coaches, we’re already a bit further along the agile path compared to our coachees. However, this doesn’t mean we’re coaching from a far-off place. Instead, we meet them just half a step ahead, giving them room to grow without overwhelming or intimidating them.

Half a step ahead is an ideal place to stand. From here, we can offer agile knowledge and experiences that may help them take their next steps on their journey. It’s like lending a helping hand without applying too much pressure.

When we understand that we’re acting as coaches in the agile context, it’s important to stay focused on our main goal: guiding them in adopting and practicing agile principles. However, this doesn’t mean we disregard other aspects of their life or work. We still pay attention to the individual as a whole, both their work side and personal side.

To ascertain where they are on the agile journey, we need to listen to them carefully. Listen to their beliefs about the working world, let them share past experiences, and let them talk about the challenges they’re currently facing. By listening, we can recognize where they are on their journey and adjust our approach accordingly to their needs.

It’s important to remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach in agile coaching. Every individual has unique needs, goals, and experiences. Therefore, as a coach, flexibility and adaptability are key. By meeting them half a step ahead, we can provide the support they need to grow and succeed in their journey towards agile excellence.
