Shitting Or Getting Off The Pot

I’ve been wanting to do a blog for a while to focus on a variety of topics that interest me (mostly long-views on technology, investments, macroeconomics, and probably some stuff about travel, food, new music, etc.) and spur discussions that help me continuously form and reform my thinking and opinions. I think I do my best thinking during the act of writing something out (including this exposition), and find myself doing this for a variety of daily tasks. It’s why I love working on business plans and slide decks; not because of the final output is the primary thing, but because the process itself forces me to collect my thoughts, identify gaps or inconsistencies, challenge my assumptions, and otherwise strive to make it bulletproof. Or good enough.
I also have this tendency to try to perfect things 101% when 80% is “good enough”, and that’s something that I need to work on. There’s a time and place for perfection, but in forming opinions and arguments, I think you need as much input as you can get as quickly as you can, and then you need time to let it marinate in your mind before you come back to it with a finished product. In the metaphor of software development, I’ve been approaching blogging from a waterfall methodology of waiting having a complete, whole product ready to go and then potentially missing the window of it being relevant, and I need to adjust to be more agile: get an MVP (minimum viable product) out to market faster, then let the users beat on it to find the strengths, weaknesses, the things that resonate, and the things that bomb to make it robust, and create a better feedback loop to funnel that into my next round of thinking for continuous improvement of my own thought processes.
So, I’m going to try to blog more often if for nothing else than to get my ideas organized and out there as an MVP, and I welcome you to participate and provide raw and honest feedback. Let me know where I have gaps, inconsistencies, or contradictions in my thought process and arguments. I’m doing this for me, but you can help. Hopefully it’ll be more blog, and less blob.
But be cool about it. There’s already enough trolls, and you wouldn’t stand out or differentiate yourself by being yet another one. Respectful, thoughtful, well-reasoned criticism and debate is warmly welcomed.
Okay…enough exposition…time to shit or get off the pot…
