Use MetaMask with Ethereum Classic

*Not Officially Endorsed by Metamask.io*

This post is for ETC users interested in using the MetaMask browser extension and some Ethereum dApps enabled by MetaMask with the Ethereum Classic blockchain. It is available for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

“MetaMask is a bridge that allows you to visit the distributed web of tomorrow in your browser today. It allows you to run Ethereum dApps right in your browser without running a full Ethereum node.” — Metamask.io

To use it with Ethereum Classic.

1.) You will need to download the extension by visiting this link.

2.) Right-Click on the appropriate Zip File corresponding with your browser.

3.) Unzip into a folder with the same name.

4A.) With Google Chrome, Go to Settings > Extensions > Load Unpacked Extension > Choose Unzipped Folder.

4B.) With Mozilla Firefox, Open the Add-ons Manger > Click on the gear icon (Tools for all add-ons) > Install Add-on From File > Choose Unzipped File.

Remember to back up your seed. This is like your private key. You have now downloaded MetaMask and can use it with Ethereum, Ropsten, and now Ethereum Classic.

One Final Step!

5.) In the top left hand corner of MetaMask, click on Ethereum Main Net and change it to Ethereum Classic.

Choose Ethereum Classic in Top Left Hand Corner

Now you are using MetaMask with the Ethereum Classic network. What’s really cool about this is there are some dApps that you can now use with ETC automatically.

For example….

Token Factory and the Web3 version of Mist. Now on ETC.

Shout out to MetaMask developers for creating MetaMask in the first place and making it easy for ETC Dev “Sorpaas” and “EtherNinja” to do the development work of adding ETC.

*We’re distributing this experimental extension via an unofficial channel until MetaMask officially supports ETC. Use at your own risk*
