Bamboo Dragon Boat

hand-rolled cigarettes lay
sprinkled upon rickety deck
rolling to and fro
with every rocking wave

while birds peck at
sun baked flesh and
moon soaked bones once
home to tremoring hearts

brave bamboo dragon boat
fled nightmare Hermit Kingdom
by waning moon’s light
silken dreams of Nippon

cold northern winds harsh
sea salt spray whims
of wave and cloud

sickly skeleton crew endured
shivering nights feverish days
envisioning meat and tea

…at least they tried
