How do you turn suffering into transformation?

There are likely many ways to achieve such an end: through doing good works on behalf of others in need; through intentional prayer; through meditation and close reading of the spiritual journeys of others; through forgiveness and reconciliation.

The Greeks said that,

“Man must suffer to be wise.”

I am not sure I ever really understood exactly what that meant. Now I believe that it has to do with developing an empathic muscle. As we experience our own pains through the slings and arrows of life’s experiences, we are more likely to understand and even feel the pains of others. And as we develop empathy, our own suffering is transformed into deep human connection. We come to understand that suffering, in fact, deepens our humanity.
