How long gave you been doing business downtown?

Globe Salon just celebrated its 10th anniversary downtown in July, while October 31 will be our 18th anniversary as a company.

What drew you to our downtown?

Being downtown was the vision I had for Globe Salon from the time it manifested in my head. I wanted to bring an uptown salon to the downtown action, similar to what I had seen happening in other cities. I wanted to be part of that revitalization process in my hometown.

What are some of the ways you’ve seen it evolve?

It’s been great seeing other independent business people taking a chance on our downtown. There’s so many new businesses, wonderful restaurants and bars for socializing and now we’re seeing major infrastructure improvements and new apartments. The vision of our downtown districts has really come alive; it’s a dramatic change from 2008.

Recent studies show that Las Vegas is a top 10 metro area for women owned businesses. How does that make you feel?

That’s pretty awesome. Many of our clients are women executives, so to me Las Vegas has long seemed to be a very open business environment. I think more women bringing vision to small business says that women are starting to take more risks. It’s great!

What advice do you have for other women who want to start their own business?

Make sure to differentiate between a hobby and a business. Also, it’s very different practicing something (like hairdressing) and then running a business in that field. Since I still work behind the chair, I actually have two or three jobs, versus just one before opening the salon. Find some mentors and listen to them. Sometimes they know best!

Famous words to live by

Nobody ever told me it was easy, and they were right. There are advantages and disadvantages to being a woman-owned business so like anyone else in business, you have to leverage your advantages and offset the disadvantages.
