I have a drug problem.
I don’t use them, but they still affect me. This is Siv’s story.
Where I come from there’s a culture of men who get their work done and run straight to the shebeen after a hard day’s work. I grew up seeing how addiction kills people and destroys lives.
Actor and comedian Siv Ngesi has a heart of gold. Growing up in Gugulethu where his grandmother ran a shebeen, he used to see the comings and goings of people in his community using and abusing alcohol and drugs. With his charity Siv Gives Back he aims to create awareness among young people about how giving back is not just about giving money, but also about giving time and respect. That’s why he is proud to put his name behind the City of Cape Town’s Substance Abuse Campaign.
“I have members in my family who have been destroyed by tik, and they need to want to change. It’s up to the addict to get help in the end, but I feel my purpose is to help spread the word by playing a positive role. Young kids look up to me, and I want to say to them: substance abuse affects all races, and no one is exempt. Get help. And for families who have to deal with an addict: don’t give up hope. I know it’s like pushing a tractor, but even the smallest change is worth pursuing. We all have a reason for being on this planet, and you can find yours too. Whatever your vice is, you need to know that it is destroying your life.”
